There are 2 sections to this guide:
1. Small attachments
2. Larger files
1. Small attachments
As some of you may have noticed, when you are composing a reply/message, there is a small tab called "Upload attachment" right underneath the "Save", "Preview" and "Submit" buttons when you post.
This allows you to select an image, upload it, make a comment on it, and post it's BBcode into your message. eg.
- Code: Select all
[img]http://this_is_cool_code_and_links_to_images.com/image5.jpg[/img]
BBcode is basically the forum's local equivalent of html code that works within our messages.
Contrary to my understanding that the forum's open-source didn't support this function, it has been enabled the entire time, just locked down to smaller file sizes for default security. It now currently works for small files up to 64KB, as we don't have space on our servers to be hosting all the attachments people want to post, but is OK for small images like avatars, or maybe the odd pdf or MS Word document. Still, this space is limited, so please don't post all and sundry there.
The uploader is fairly self-explanitory, but for the technologically challenged amongst you, I will post a brief summary:
- 1. Press upload attachment tab
- 2. Click "Choose file" button
- 3. Navigate to file, and select
- 4. Click "Add the file"
- 5. Add a comment if you so desire
- 6. Click preview or submit when you are finished editing your message.
Pretty simple eh?
2. Larger files
As it is, for some picture files or scripts for example, we don't have the space to host everything, and so the answer is free image hosting or file hosting! There are a great many websites out there designed to let you upload files of varying sizes (usually up to 100-250MB at a time) and will automatically generate links for you to use in html, BBcode and others.
These websites do change from time-to-time, and it's your responsibility to go out there and find one that works for you. At the time of writing, a couple of good ones to use are:
For Photos:
http://imageshack.us/
http://photobucket.com/
http://tinypic.com/
For other files:
http://www.mediafire.com/
http://myfreefilehosting.com/
Just follow the instructions on your chosen site, and paste the code into your thread/post, making sure the URL (location) of the image is contained within the start and end tags, which you can make appear by clicking the "Img" button at the top of your post. eg:
- Code: Select all
[img]imagelocation.jpg[/img]
Now, failing all that and if desperate, you can always email webmaster@teamtv.org.uk with your file, and ask to have it uploaded. This isn't always as quick though! We're keen for everyone to do it themselves.
Summary
Right, this guide should give you the information necessary to upload all kinds of files to this forum, if you need any help, please feel free to direct yourselves to Google, and search any one of the following three terms, which will most likely bring up other, even more detailed guides on the duck soup subject matter discussed above.
- Forum attachments - http://www.google.com/search?&q=forum+attachments&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
so let's give it a try:

there go. Happy attachment-posting chaps!
